FAQs

What can I expect during my first session?

The first couple of sessions typically involve going over paperwork, gathering information about you, and getting to know each other. We may discuss the documents you completed, payment, and answer any questions you may have. Going forward, the topics we discuss and the concerns we explore will be based on what you would like to focus on in that particular session.

What is confidentiality and how does it work?

Confidentiality is the requirement that therapists and mental health professionals protect their client’s privacy by not revealing the contents of therapy. Confidentiality is protected by state law and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Learn more about confidentiality and its exclusions here.

How long will I need to be in therapy?

There are many opinions out there about how long someone should engage in therapy. I believe that each client concern is unique and that it is difficult to know how long someone may need to attend therapy sessions. I typically recommend weekly sessions for the first 8 weeks. This frequency and duration has been shown to be the most beneficial in building rapport, exploring concerns, and making progress towards change/healing. Each client is different and those needs/goals will be considered when discussing the duration/frequency of therapy.

Why don’t you accept insurance?

Insurance can be tricky. My goal is to make therapy as accessible as possible. Choosing to not accept insurance at this time allows me to work with those who may not have insurance, choose not to use their insurance, or do not have mental health coverage as part of their policy. Other reasons include, mandatory diagnosis, reduced choice in care, and reduced confidentiality.

What is your cancellation policy?

I have a 24-hour cancellation policy and a no-call, no-show policy. You may cancel your session via email, text, or phone within 24 hours of your scheduled session. If a session is not cancelled within 24 hours of the scheduled time and/or you do not notify me that you will not be attending the session, you will be charged a $50 cancellation fee. Emergencies happen and things come up, so please let me know if the cancellation is due to an extenuating circumstance.

What is an LLPC?

LLPC is a Limited License Professional Counselor. This credential means that I have received a master’s degree from a CACREP-accredited counseling program in clinical mental health counseling and have received my counseling license from the State of Michigan. I am currently under supervision by a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC).

How does out-of-network reimbursement work?

It is important to check with your insurance provider to confirm that you have out-of-network coverage as part of your policy. If you do, I will provide you with a superbill (an itemized receipt of services). Once you receive the superbill, it is up to you to coordinate reimbursement with your insurance provider.

What if we’re not a suitable fit?

Finding a therapist that is able to assist you in your therapeutic journey is incredibly important. There may be a time when your presenting concern or issue is outside of my scope of practice. If this situation arises, it is important to me that you receive the most competent and ethical care possible. We will discuss your options and I will provide you with a list of clinical referrals that I believe would be best able to serve you and address your presenting issue.
